The Environment

Gualchos, with its privileged viewpoint over the Mediterranean is an idyllic Andalucian mountain village in the Contraviesa Baja (the foothills of the Sierra Nevada) very close to the coast of Granada. At 350 m above sea level with sea & mountain views. The name Gualchos comes from the Arabic word "Guadichauz" which means hidden river.

From the Eastern part of the village one can see the Sierra Nevada (with its highest mountain Mulhacen 3.482 m) which is covered with snow for 6/7 months a year.


Gualchos offers you all you need for an pleasant holiday. The village has two bars & a supermarket. Nearby there is a Bar/Restaurant with a terrace which serves the local cuisine. Fresh fish is on sale five times a week from 10 o'clock to midday in the village square. Bread can be bought fresh from the baker's or from a van which tours the village streets at midday.

Apart from a quiet stay in the village and environs, there are enjoyable walks to be had or interesting excursions to be made daily by car.

FIESTAS:

- 2nd of February: La Candelaria.
- 29th of September: San Miguel (the village fiesta).
- In the small hamlet of Jolúcar, the romeria, or pilgrimage of San Cayetano is celebrated on the 7th of August, & during the months of July & August fiestas are celebrated in most villages in the province.

How to get there:

From Granada , take the N-323 to the Salobreña / Motril crossroads, and take the N-340 in the direction of Almería until Castell de Ferro. Just before Castell de Ferro the Gualchos turn-off is marked (6 km).

- 7 km to Castell de Ferro.
- 17 km to Motril, (town with 50.000 inhabitants).
- 98 km to Granada & the Moorish palace of the Alhambra.
- 140 km to the Sierra Nevada, ski station & ski slopes.

 

Aeroports:

- Málaga & Almería (at 120 km from Gualchos).
- Granada (national flights only).
